Let me preface by saying that what I say here only applies to software companies. Hardware companies NEED to be in person at least for the foreseeable future.
It's rah-rah to be all in on in-person, and I really do like in-person, but the future is changing:
Powerhouse teams of 2nd and 3rd time founders are collaborating, complemented by AI, means that team sizes are going to drastically reduce.
At larger corps, the fat of middle management will continue to get cut. There will be fewer jobs at large corps.
People will need to find jobs elsewhere. There won't be enough in-person jobs to meet the demand of the supply of people needing a job.
Great founders and teams will hire remote workers and previous founders who are experienced at working remotely.
People will need to upskill using AI but there's likely to be more startups that will have fewer people, working remotely, doing amazing things.
I think we'll start to see billion dollar businesses with just a few people (but that's an entirely separate thread we could go down).
The tl;dr is that given the supply of workers and constraints on local markets, people will once again need to look globally for opportunities.
