Last night I went to see BADBADNOTGOOD, a jazz band that defies genre.
Their music is emotional, powerful, soft, intense, melodic, and psychedelic—my kind of music.
The crowd was into it, riled up, and loving the vibe.
I couldn't help but notice the couple in front of us.
In a sea of blackness, both of them were on their camera and phone filming the entire show... and I mean, the entire show.
Not a quick shot for keepsake, but actively filming, side by side, staring through a screen.
Now, not only is this incredibly rude to the people behind them because it obstructs the view and selfishly ruins the show for others, but the more interesting behavior is perhaps their lack of self awareness, their lack of presence in the world.
They were filtering the experience through their devices.
They weren't actually looking at the live performance - they were looking at the performance through the glass on their devices.
Just think about that for a moment - a live musical performance that these people are filming to "remember" the moment, yet the moment isn't actually real because they were never really there - they didn't actually take in the performance through their very own eyes.
Is filming the experience just for vanity?
Just for the likes, eyeballs, and jealousy from their friends? It's very likely.
I don't know what to say other than I have little hope for these two, for they are so far gone, so addicted to screen time that they can't set their devices down for 90 minutes to enjoy something real.
